Martial Arts: Another Crossfit Choice

Top athletes, especially martial artists, are training harder than ever. They realize that it takes much more than just training in their respected disciplines to be in championship form. The days of just doing road work and martial arts classes are long gone for the competitive mixed martial artist.

Fighters need, power, speed, strength, endurance and more than ever, mental toughness to be at their best. As a result, what we’re seeing more and more is that many fighters are turning to CrossFit to compliment their fight training. It provides all the resources needed to achieve every aspect of peak physical conditioning and mental strength. CrossFit can challenge even the best of athletes. And these days it’s not hard to find a good CrossFit gym in your city.

  • CrossFit IS A PERFECT COMPLIMENT TO MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING. WHY?

It’s a perfect compliment to martial arts because it closely mimics the mental stress & physical movements that happen during a fight. Just a couple examples of the body movements are Sprawls, Burpees, Flying Knees, and Box Jumps and most importantly, at least for me, are Slams, Power Clean & Jerks, or Power Snatch.

But then again when you are talking about performance athletes, no matter what the sport, the movements and how we mix and match them to form our workouts will carry over no matter what because most of what we do, at least at my gym, is the development of power in the hips. You can be strong but are you powerful?

  • CrossFit CAN CHALLENGE THE BEST OF ATHLETES.

A powerful athlete is not a strong athlete, but one who can exert his strength quickly. Since power equals force times speed, if the athlete learns to make faster movements he increases his power, even though the contractile pulling strength of his muscles remains unchanged. Thus, a smaller man who can swing faster may hit as hard or as far as the heavier man who swings slowly.

The athlete who is building muscles through weight training should be very sure to work adequately on speed and flexibility at the same time. In combat, without the prior attributes, a strong man will be like the bull with its colossal strength, futilely pursuing the matador, or like a low-geared truck chasing a rabbit.
